campaigns. But in 1812 he met with his first reverses, in Spain and Russia, and two years later France was invaded and Napoleon forced to abdicate. He took power again on his return from exile on the island of Elba but the \i ôHundred Daysö\i0 that foll
owed culminated in his defeat at Waterloo (1815) and a new banishment, for good this time, to the island of St Helena, where he died in 1821.\par
